Knoll : Bauhaus Color | Tugendhat+ Barcelona
For the relaunch of the Tugendhat Chair and the introduction of textile upholstery to the Barcelona Chair, I developed a palette of textiles, leathers, and belting leathers that expanded the material expression of these iconic designs. The palette focused on saturated color and materials with depth and richness—textiles with pronounced texture and character, paired with a carefully developed range of belting leathers.Rather than treating the upholstery and belting as independent selections, the combinations were considered together, allowing color, texture, and leather to create a complete material expression for each chair. For Barcelona, introducing textile offered an opportunity to reconsider a design historically associated with leather, bringing softness, color, and tactility to its highly recognizable structure. For Tugendhat, the new palette similarly builds upon the chair’s material character while opening it to a broader and more contemporary range of interiors.Across both collections, the intention was to use richness and saturation without excess—allowing strong color and material to feel integral to the architecture of the chair rather than applied to it.
