Knoll : New York Retail

For Knoll’s New York retail space, Pernilla Ohrstedt and I used metal mesh curtains as a primary spatial element—creating divisions, thresholds, and backdrops without enclosing the interior into fixed rooms. Their transparency allows furniture and color to remain visible across the space, producing layers of overlapping environments and shifting perspectives. The mesh moves between architecture and material: at times defining an edge, at others becoming a translucent backdrop through which furniture, light, and the city beyond remain present. Its metallic surface changes throughout the day, alternately absorbing, reflecting, and filtering light, and establishing relationships with polished chrome, glass, stone, leather, and other reflective materials throughout the interior.Against this layered and predominantly neutral material landscape, concentrated moments of saturated yellow create points of intensity. Historic and con-temporary Knoll pieces are composed together across domestic, workplace, and hospitality settings, with the mesh allowing these different environments to remain visually connected. The result is an interior defined less by fixed rooms than by degrees of transparency and enclosure—using material, light, and color to continually redraw the space.
